The Ultimate Guide to Texturized Updos
Texture Tips Every Updo Needs

A beautiful updo–there’s truly nothing like it. Whether it’s a stunning accent to a gorgeous outfit or the total star of the look, an updo (and a stunning one, at that) is a style that every beauty pro out there should strive to perfect.

The thing about updos? They’re not all created equal. You know what we mean, right?

You’ve seen a stunning updo and a lackluster updo side-by-side and you can tell the difference. But can you put your finger on it?

That finger-on-the-problem is exactly what we’re here to talk about today.

So, we beg the question–what exactly makes a beautiful updo? What’s that secret sauce–that exceptional element–that takes a subpar updo to a stunning one?

We’ve got one word for you: Texture.

Yep, it’s that simple, stylists. Texture makes the world go-'round, and the updos go from meh to wow.

Sure, there are a lot of other skills involved in a beautiful updo (it’s not like it’s easy), but texture is that minor, teeny, extra tweak that can take an A-OK updo to a never-see-a-more-stunning-hairstyle-in-my-lifetime kinda look.

Ready to find out how you can implement a little extra texture in your next updo look? We got you.  Here are a few go-to tips for texture like you’ve only dreamed of.

The Texture Tips Every Updo Needs

The mission: create killer texture in your next updo. But how do you execute this goal?

We got you. Here are a few must-know tips for styling stunning updos that put texture at the forefront.

Buildable Products for the Win

Don’t misinterpret us–when we say buildable products, we don’t mean heavy products. In fact, we mean the exact opposite. Too much heavy product can cause someone’s updo to collapse under the weight of all (what a nightmare).

The right buildable products will offer flexibility and support you can build upon for the ultimate hold (without that dreaded crunchiness or heavy hair stuff).

The best advice we can offer?

Heavily test the products you want to use before you trust them. Make sure you test them in all the conditions your clients will face.

For example, don’t recommend a product to a bride getting married on the beach unless you know that product is going to work with the humidity, wind, and other beachy conditions.

Give Those Roots a Little Attention

The biggest mistake with adding volume to an updo? Making it an afterthought.

The volume goal should be top of mind before you even start styling. You know what that means, right? Those roots need to be your primary focus from the start.

Whether you decide to tease the roots (we’ll talk about that in a minute, hang tight) or crimp them (a fun method for extra volume), the main idea is to keep the volume goal top of mind when you’re strategizing your approach for styling.

AKA, never leave volumizing for last, pretty please.

Tease, Please

Want a little extra height on that updo? Don’t forget to tease! No, teasing isn’t just for those 80s-era looks–teasing can provide a whole lot of volume without lookin’ wild.

You just need to know how to use this technique. Focus on the crown of the head and other pieces before you add them to the updo.

What’s this do for your look? It’ll ensure those teased pieces have a lil lift–this way; they won’t lay limp and flat as part of the look. They’ve got a little life and lift!

Curls All Over

Even if the whole look doesn’t necessarily call for curls, adding this to your pre-styling routine can bring a look–even a smooth one–to life.

It can be super easy to fall into the “save time” trap and only curl the areas of the head where you need it for the look, but trust us, investing time in a whole-head curl is going to bring you the lift, life, and vibrancy your client is after.

Try adding in a little working spray first, curling the entire head with a smaller-to-mid-sized barrel (maybe a 1-1.5-inch curling iron or wand), then add in some magical, buildable texturizing spray we recommended you find.
