It’s only natural that as the new year’s energy grips you, you find yourself ready and willing to make exciting resolutions that are sure to take you further than you ever imagined.
There’s just one problem—how can you know you’re setting the right resolutions?

Maybe you’ve got a whole list of resolutions you’ve laid out in front of you. Maybe you’re not sure what resolutions exactly that you want to chase. Either way, setting yourself up to tackle your goals with these three steps is going to ensure that you’re on the right track for the new year.
Set Specific Goals & Create Actionable Steps to Tackle Your Ambitions
It’s not enough to vaguely chase greatness—you need to know what you’re going after in a specific way. So, do that.
Take some time—schedule it if you have to!—and make your goals as specific as possible.
You want to expand your salon? By how much.
You want to reach new heights in your education? In what way? You want to expand your career in exciting ways?
Good—what specifically does that look like?
Unless you’re chasing down specific goals, you’ll always be grasping very vague resolutions and keeping yourself from setting yourself up for success.
Now that you’ve set those exact goals, make sure you know how to reach them.
It’s not enough to write your goal up on a vision board and walk away, hoping that it comes true. Put that goal on a vision board and then create actionable steps that help you work toward that goal.
Not sure where to start? Divide it up and tackle it in pieces. What are the monthly steps you’ll take toward that goal? What do your weekly goals look like? How about your daily ones?
Start small, plan, and set yourself up for success this way.
Resist the Urge to Fall Back to Old Patterns
Part of reaching for the stars and making new ground is resisting the urge to fall back into old patterns and settle for less than you deserve. Take time to identify what held you back last year (and don’t be surprised if the answer is you).
Schedule some time to evaluate and analyze your habits.
Are you spending time investing in habits that are good for you and are furthering your goals? Are you spending too much time falling back into old patterns that hold you back?
If you want to reach new heights this year, you’ll need to make room for growth and get ready to be uncomfortable.

Maybe instead of vegging out on the couch after work you could attend a networking event in your area. Want to diversify your income? Dedicate your time in the morning before work toward developing a new skill.
