The process can be lengthy, so it’s best to get started as early as possible when you decide you want to move your license from one state to another. Some states do offer reciprocity for licensure, but this varies widely.

For example, according to the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, out-of-state licensees can simply fill out a reciprocity application and pay a fee in order to receive a new license, as long as they have proof of a current license which has been active for three of the last five years and hasn’t been revoked or suspended. Often, different states vary the amount of required education, so you may need more training hours in order to satisfy your new state’s requirements.
