Let’s face it—2020 has been kind of a dumpster fire. We don’t say that in jest, and we certainly don’t say that with intent to undermine any of the tragedy that’s befallen our society this year, but at some point, you’ve gotta call a spade a spade, right? 

This year has brought about all kinds of unprecedented tragedy that none of us could have prepared for—from natural disasters to global pandemics to social unrest, there’s no denying there’s a lot happening right now. 

Many of us in the beauty industry have been ping-ponging back and forth between quarantine-style lock downs and socially distanced reunions with the clients we love all while balancing the overall unrest we’ve been feeling the world.

So, it goes without saying we’re all probably feeling a tad distracted. 

That’s the understatement of the year, huh? 

We want to start off by saying that if you find yourself struggling to focus on your career, your salon, your goals, or anything productive in general, know that you’re not alone and that it’s OK to not be OK. 

That sounds cliché, but it’s true. These are weird, chaotic, and uncertain times—there’s no protocol or guide for how to be OK, so rest easy knowing we’re all winging it as much as you are.

But just because everything is feeling banana-nut-crazy all around us doesn’t mean we must succumb to the chaos and lose our desire to focus on the things that matter most to us. 

It’s important to work on finding a sense of direction to center yourself, and that’s precisely what we’re here to help you do.

Self-Care Comes First

That’s right, people, self-care has to come first.

Think about it—if you’re not filling your tank, you’re running on empty, and we all know how far something can go with an empty tank, right? (Tip: the answer is nowhere). 

Self-care is a complicated subject because it looks different for everyone. Sometimes self-care is a bubble bath and a milkshake. Other times, it’s scheduling an extra session with your therapist.

Don’t be afraid to self-soothe, of course, but don’t mistake that for self-care. Self-care is sometimes the tough stuff we don’t necessarily want to do but need to for our own well-being. 

Take time to focus on yourself, your mental health, and your brain. Get enough sleep, eat well, exercise, take breaks, and avoid leaning on indulgences that could trigger even more stress. It also never hurts to chat with a professional who can teach you healthy ways to focus and take care of yourself.

Mind Your Priorities 

It’s time to really sort through everything you must get done and really analyze how important those tasks really are. Write down a list of what you want to accomplish and then rank them by priority. 

Clean the salon? That’s an urgent task. Play with your pup. That’s a double-urgent task.

Create a new line of organic conditioners for a new project? Important, but maybe label that one as “important later” so you can better manage your time and your productivity now.

Your New BFF: The To-Do List

Can’t seem to get your mind around everything you need to do? Organize it with a to-do list.

To-do lists might seem a little silly, but if you regularly create a daily list of what you need, you can have a reference for what needs to be done, how important it is, and account for what you’ve already accomplished.

You can do this the old-fashioned way with a pen and paper or you can go all new-age digital on yourself with an organization app or software. Choose whatever works best for you! 

Center Your Mind 

Ever heard of a little somthin’-somethin’ called mind mapping?

It might sound a little funky at first, but it’s a great way to analyze and structure your own thoughts to develop a sense of organization and control.

Whether you mind map through the help of an app like Simple Mind (or something else) or you find peace and logic in self-led meditation, these simple, consistent efforts can help you refocus and re-center yourself in a snap.
