Salon Tools for a Successful Career:

Equipment, Tips, and Beyond

First things first, know this—there’s no one way to find success in the beauty biz.

Our industry is rich with all types of success stories in all types of niches, so, it’s important that you don’t read into this blog as a this-way-or-the-highway type of success shaming thing. Instead, think of this as a  few experts coming together to share what they believe to be hugely important tools for success—AKA, a melding of the beauty-biz-minded to share their own must-have tools for salon, spa, and shop success!

Believe it or not, it’s not entirely about the equipment (we know, we know, saying tools might make it sound like we’re writing up a must-buy guide for the top brands of salon essentials). While tools are certainly important, they don’t make the man or woman—contrary to the common saying.

What really makes the stylist? Everything else you bring to the table.

We’ve curated a little beauty industry advice from some of the pros here at Elite Beauty Society to craft a list of the must-haves to help you forge your own path to success.

Don’t worry—it’s not as overwhelming as it sounds. Oftentimes, the greatest success can start with the most basic building blocks.

On-Point Branding

You’ve likely been told this since you were a child, but if you have a firm grasp on who you are, you’ll probably get pretty far in life. Turns out, that advice holds up in the beauty industry, too—especially when it comes to brand.

Having a deep understanding and firm grasp on your salon or shop’s branding is a big step toward being a successful business. But branding can be a tricky concept. It’s this weird, exciting mix of tangible and intangible aspects that all come together to form a cohesive message about who you are, what you stand for, and what matters to you as a business.

Your brand is a mesh of tangible things like your aesthetic, your marketing, your color schemes, and fonts, but it also includes important factors like your mission statement, your purpose, our goals, and your brand message. A brand helps distinguish you from another company, it’s what sets you apart and shows the world what makes you unique and memorable.

Make sure you know who you are as a company and have a strong grasp on what makes your brand stand out.

Must-Have Equipment

Of course, essential tools absolutely matter, too—we won’t pretend they don’t. Investing in high-quality tools from the get-go can help ensure you’re on the right path to success from the start. While there’s a whole list of must-have equipment out there, we’ve laid out a few of the most basic tools right here to get you going.

Professional Liability Insurance

Yes, as an insurance company that provides cohesive coverage for stylists like you, we obviously have a horse in this race—we’ll just go ahead and lay that bias on the line as clearly as possible. But, that’s not why we’re advising you invest in liability insurance.

Even if you don’t work with us, we’d rather you take the must-have steps to protect yourself than not take them at all. Like it or not, liability insurance can protect you from career- halting allegations, claims, and litigation, save you a ton of money, and even help you hold up your reputation should some type of incident arise.

We hate to say it (not we don’t, we love helping spread the word about coverage like this), but liability insurance is literally the million-dollar tool every stylist needs to invest in.

Top-Notch Marketing Strategy

If you read the word “marketing” and immediately got overwhelmed, we’ve got two words for you—don’t panic. We promise, you don’t need to be a marketing guru with a fancy degree to know a thing or two about creating a helpful strategy for your business. You just need a few, simple tips to help you get started.

We’ve laid out a few of our marketing guides right here to give you some groundwork to build on:

Ultimately, marketing is a valuable tool for a lot of reasons. It helps you spread your brand message, allows you to identify and reach your target market, and it keeps people aware of who you are, what you’re doing, and how you can help them.

Obviously, marketing is one of the main ways that you get people into your salon—and keep them there. It only makes sense that this would be one of the biggest tools for your salon or shop’s success.

All in all, there are tons of tools you can employ to be a successful stylist or run a badass business—but ultimately, you’ll need heart, drive, and determination to really go the distance. We’re not worried about you, though—you’ve got this.
