Our Top Questions for Sher: Getting to Know Her & Her Beauty Biz

How Did You Get Started in the Industry?

I first started in beauty as a hobby. I also dabbled in MLMs, where I had to learn basic skincare and makeup to be knowledgeable for clients. Eventually, I started my beauty blog for fun, and it took off. Then, I became interested in starting my own makeup practice, doing makeup for clients. I started researching and shadowed under a mentor for a little while until I felt confident to start my business as my own.

How Long Have You Been Running Your Own Business?

Itโ€™s been almost two years! Iโ€™m still pretty new!

Think About When You Were Just Getting Startedโ€“What are Some Things You Wish Youโ€™d Known?

I wish I had gone through a certification program first. There are a lot of little nuisances about the industry you donโ€™t know at first. It would have been better to have the confidence that I was doing everything on track. I also wish I had known how physically demanding the job can be and that I didnโ€™t have to spend so much money on my kit. I could have started with some basics and mixed and matched more.

Thereโ€™s Good and Bad in Every Industry and Every Jobโ€“Whatโ€™s the Peach and Whatโ€™s the Pit About Running Your Own Beauty Business?

My peach: I am absolutely in love with doing makeup. I love the art of it, and I love that I get to be a part of some of the biggest days of my clientsโ€™ lives!

My pit: I do not enjoy the admin side of the job: the contracts, the constant sanitizing, the clients who end up ghosting, etc.

If You Had to Pick One Thing, What Do You Love Most About Your Job?

Seeing the work of my hands. The before and after transformations that make my clients feel and look beautiful! Nothing compares to that moment I hand them the mirror to see their finished look!

Your Go-To 5 Productsโ€“What Are They Currently?

  1. The Cinema Secrets Brush Cleaner (my ride or die!)
  2. Laura Mercier Translucent Powder (I go through it like candy!)
  3. My directorโ€™s chair portable makeup chair (from Amazon. No other chairs work right for me.)
  4. My Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eyeshadow Palette (I use this palette 80% of the time for bridal looks!)
  5. Anastasia Beverly Hills Loose Pigments (makes stunning bridal pigments!)

What 3 Tips Would You Share with Someone Whoโ€™s Just Starting Out in the Industry?

  1. Practice, practice, practice! Make sure to perfect your skills on as many skin tones and types and ages as possible.
  2. Be prepared to create looks on a whim. Every client will come with an inspo picture to replicate.
  3. Never sell yourself short. Set your price point fair but high. Donโ€™t give services away just because you are new.
