You Need Cosmetology Liability Insurance: Here’s Why

We’re less interested in posing the question, do you need liability insurance for beauty pros like you. Why? Because we already know the answer. No, we’re not just trying to be pushy and force you into buying our insurance.

(We’re so insistent on this that we say that we don’t even care if you opt-out of our insurance–just get high-quality insurance ASAP to protect yourself!)

So, instead of begging the question, we just want to offer super helpful information. Here are a few of the main reasons why you need cosmetology liability insurance.

You Need to Manage Assumed Risk

When you become a cosmetologist, you assume a certain amount of risk–that risk is called liability.

Like it or not, you’re responsible for the well-being of every client who sits in your chair. That means if something goes wrong–allegedly or actually–you’re on the hook to make it right.

Without insurance, that means you’re covering the legal and financial repercussions of that all by yourself.

Handling that risk on your own can be overwhelming and potentially disastrous.

Liability insurance is designed to shoulder that risk, take care of you if (and when) something goes wrong, and tackle whatever issues crop up. The beautiful thing about cosmetology liability insurance? If you find a top-notch partner with a solid policy, all of your services could be covered–no matter how specialized they might be.

Prepare for the Unlikely, Improbable, & Unexpected

Assumed risk is part of the gig. The unlikely stuff is what can throw you for a real loop.

Sometimes, things just happen. A client might react badly to a product you use. Someone might suggest you injured them. Someone could slip and fall in your salon and sue you.

The fact of the matter is this–there are common, assumed risks, and then there are risks that no one could ever prepare you for. Things happen–even the most unlikely and improbable things.

Liability insurance helps you tackle that risk head-on and make sure you’re prepared–no matter how improbably it might be.

The fact of the matter is beauty insurance can protect you, your career, and your future.

What’s Cosmetology Liability Insurance?

So, we’ve figured out that liability insurance is a must for cosmetologists.

But what kind of liability insurance should you get? Unfortunately, insurance jargon can get confusing, so it’s not always as easy as a quick google. That’s why we’re dropping the must-know stuff right here, right now.

There are three main types of liability insurance: general, professional, and product liability insurance. For the sake of brevity, we’re going to cover the two most important.

Let’s Talk General Liability Insurance

General liability insurance covers you in terms of things that don’t pertain to your professional services. Often, general liability insurance is referred to as “slip ‘n’ fall” insurance because it’s more about accidents that pertain to your establishment.

On our site, we define general liability insurance as “Insurance that protects the policyholder in the event that a client trips, falls, and suffers an injury while on their property.

This coverage applies to claims resulting from personal injury, bodily injury, or damage to other's property, and is often called ‘trip and fall’  insurance.”

What is Professional Liability Insurance?

If general liability insurance is your slip ‘n’ fall sort of insurance that protects you from things that aren’t in your direct, professional control, consider professional liability insurance the opposite.

Professional liability insurance is going to cover you in terms of the services you provide to your clients. For the sake of consistency, we’ll give you the definition we use on our site.

Professional liability insurance is “insurance that provides protection against lawsuits claiming negligence, misconduct or incompetence on the policyholder’s behalf; also called malpractice insurance.”
