Odds are, if you’re putting all of your efforts into your career, working hard, and loving every minute of it (for the most part), you’re already a great stylist.
That being said, because we’re human, it can be hard to recognize when we’re doing something better than just OK.
As a stylist, confidence is important. Your talent matters (of course), your people skills matter, and your business smarts matter, too—but if you’re an exceptional stylist and you don’t know it, you’re missing out on a solid dose of healthy confidence that could be taking you from talented-but-in-the-dark stylist to total superstar.
Great stylists come in so many different forms, and they all have different characteristics, traits, and skills that make them great—but we’ve noticed that a lot of the best stylists out there share some common denominators.
At Elite Beauty Society, we already know you’re awesome—but we want you to know it, too.
That’s why we listed out these top ten signs you’re an amazing stylist! Check them out, let them resonate with you, and when you see that most of these things describe you, lean into that confidence boost!
A good stylist is all about passion in every aspect of their business.
Stylists are passionate about their client’s well-being, about honing their talents, about learning new skills, and about their industry in general. A great stylist isn’t a person who clocks out at 5 and stops being a stylist—it’s who you are and what you love!
Passion is the driving attribute in most careers, but especially when it comes to being a stylist.
Because it’s tough, demanding, and can really take a toll on you mentally and physically. But, if after the long hours on your feet, the endless talks with clients, and a week straight with no days off you can say that you’re passionate about being a stylist, then nothing can stop you.
2. Work Hard to Play Hard
Amazing stylists know that work-life balance matters, but they also know that if they want to play hard on their time off, they’ve got to work hard, too.
Great stylists are all about the hustle, about being their best, about working harder and smarter so they can leverage a career they’re passionate about to live the life they want to!
When we say work hard, we don’t mean that you have to work insane hours, give up everything, and live and breath your job, but we do mean that you have to be willing to dedicate your mind, your heart, and your soul to your job in order to succeed—if you can do that, you can do anything.
3. You Go the Extra Mile for Your Clients
Great stylists understand that being a stylist isn’t just about honing your talents and expressing yourself creatively—it’s also about being a reliable source of trust, knowledge, and dependability for your clients.
If you find yourself going out of your way to help your clients, build client trust, or make them comfortable (we’re not just talking water bottles in the waiting room), then it’s likely you’re a great stylist already—even if you don’t know it yet.
4. You've Got a Thirst for Learning
The stylists that understand the learning never stops are the ones that go the farthest in their careers.
Because they get that you cannot constantly improve if you don’t make the effort to learn more, improve skills, and get better at all aspects of the stylist career. By this, we don’t mean that a great stylist is learning every new balayage technique that comes their way (that helps, don’t get us wrong)—what we mean is that great stylists focus on continuing education, conventions, conferences, and extra certifications so they can understand all sides of their business and become better at the things they’re not confident in.
Great stylists understand that feeding that hunger for learning is what’s going to be the secret formula for their success.
5. Values + Ethics = Winning
A great stylist is definitely someone who invests in their career, their talents, and their relationships with clients, but a great stylist is someone who constantly invests in themselves, too.
That means standing strong with your own values, ethics, and morals, even if it’s tough.
This comes into play in the stylist world a lot more than you’d think, so it’s important to know where you stand when it comes to your own personal values.
A great stylist knows that compromising their moral compass—or going against their own personal values—may get them more money but it doesn’t always align with who they are. Be true to yourself, to your talent, and to your ethics—that’s what’s going to keep you on top.
6. You've Got a Business Mindset but a Creative Heart
If you understand both creative expression and the business side of your career, then you’re a really great stylist.
Because even though these two things are totally different in theory, they’re two sides of the same coin. In other words, it’s tough to have a successful career as a stylist (or to be considered a great stylist) if you’re missing one or the other. A great stylist invests in their creativity, hones their talents, and is always improving, but a great stylist is also doing all they can to boost the business side of their brain, too.
7. You Know What's In
The greatest stylists are going to be a fountain of knowledge for their clients, especially when it comes to knowing what’s hot and what’s not. While it’s awesome to know how to appeal to both trend-seeking clients and clients who always know what they’re about, it’s always useful to have a firm grasp on what’s hot in stylist world this week.
Whether that’s a new color that’s becoming super popular this year or a wild-but-sexy cut, knowing what’s trending and how you can offer those things to your clients is going to keep you relevant, reliable, and give you the reputation of always being in-the-know.
8. You Know Your Clients
A good stylist remembers their clients, but an exceptional client knows their clients. If you run a booming business, it might be impossible to try to remember all the one-off clients that come in, but it’s important that you do your best to get to know everyone who sits in your chair.
Because people love working with someone who remembers them, who knows their preferences, and who tries to relate to them on a deeper level. You already know that being a stylist isn’t just about hair—it’s about trust, it’s about guidance, it’s about friendship, and it’s about being a reliable source of knowledge for the people who sit in your chair and let you do your thing.
9. You Understand How Valuable Trust Is
Like we said above, if you understand how valuable trust is, you’re probably already an amazing stylist. Clients don’t just view you as a hair stylist—they view you as an expert who’s going to take care of them, hold their hand, and provide them with something that makes them look amazing.
You’re taking tools and chemicals to their head, and if you understand that that’s a big deal to a lot of people and you’re doing everything in your power to establish and nurture that trust, you’re a fantastic stylist.
10. Repeat Clients are Your Jam
If you constantly get repeat clients, rave reviews, and recommendations, odds are, you’re a bad-ass stylist.
That being said, remember, every stylist is different, just as every establishment is different—some places might not lend themselves to consistent, repeat customers. As a general rule, though, if you get clients who keep coming back to you for more, you’re definitely an amazing stylist!
